TIE for students

Duration decides it: a TIE generally applies where the authorized study stay exceeds six months; shorter stays generally do not need one. Check the duration in your own visa and resolution, not your course brochure. EU, EEA and Swiss students are outside this route — they register as EU citizens instead. The card documents your study authorization; it cannot create one, so the authorization must already exist and be in force. If it hasn't been granted, there's no card procedure yet. If the studies change substantially, it's the authorization that needs reviewing, not the card.

The application is generally made personally by the student, within the applicable one-month period. Depending on the case, that period runs from entry into Spain, from the grant of the authorization, or from its effective date.

Follow the instructions in your visa and resolution: they are specific to your file and take precedence over general summaries. Where your programme has a dedicated international office, they often know the local police unit's practice, but the legal deadline is still yours to meet.

A core pack applies, plus documents specific to the study authorization:

• The relevant official application form, completed and signed.
• Valid passport or travel document, with copies.
• The visa and evidence of the granted study authorization.
• A recent passport-format photograph meeting the stated specification.
• Proof of payment of the corresponding fee.
• Evidence of enrolment or admission at the centre, where requested.
• Any additional document named in the resolution or in the appointment instructions.

Bring originals and copies. Requirements can differ slightly between police units, so read the appointment confirmation carefully rather than relying on a generic checklist.

Registration on the padrón municipal records your habitual address in the municipality where you actually live. Some police units request the padrón certificate as part of the card procedure; others do not, and student accommodation arrangements sometimes complicate the registration itself.

Two points worth planning for:

• Halls of residence, shared flats and host families each have their own way of evidencing your address; ask the centre what they usually issue.
• Moving city mid-course affects both your padrón and the unit that handles you, so keep your address details current.

Remember that the padrón is a municipal record, not an immigration status.

Study stays are typically extended by requesting a prórroga — an extension of the underlying study authorization — where the conditions continue to be met and the studies progress.

The order matters:

1. The extension of the study authorization is requested and granted.
2. Only then is the physical card updated to reflect the new period.

A TIE does not extend anything by itself. An in-date card with an expired underlying authorization does not preserve your stay, and an extension request lodged late is a materially worse position than one lodged in time.

Holding a student TIE says nothing on its own about whether you may work. Work compatibility under the study framework has its own conditions and limits, and depends on the authorization you hold and on the activity in question.
